Family Backgrounds of Schizophrenics

Abstract
(Read at the 14th annual meeting of The Korean Psychiatric Association, Seoul, Korea, Oct. 25, 1952)
1. The case history of 50 patients who had become manifestly schizophrenic prior to the age of 21 and admitted to Pusan University Hospital from May 1959 to September 1932, were studied to evaluate the nature of their family backgrounds and compared with data from foreign countries.
2. The factors investigated were:
(1) Loss of a parent prior to the 19th birthday;
(2) Marked rejection and/ or over-protection by on, or both parents;
(3) Chronic instability of a parent;
(4) Placement in the sibling hierarchy;
(5) Family size;and
(6) Membership in religious group.
3. O¢æ the entire group, 52% had lost a father or mother by death, divorce and separation.
It was found that the loss of the father by death was predominant; 50% of the schizophrenic orphan had lost a father, 27% a mother, and 11% had lost both.
4. Among this group, 58% came from homes in which there was severe rejection and/ or overprotection by one or both parents.
Severe rejection by one or both parents was by far the most frequently manifested attitude, 38% having been so rejected, while 26 were overprotected by one or both parents.
A rejecting father was the most frequently encountered pathological parental attitude.
5. Psychotic or chronically & seriously neurotic or psychopathic parents of schizophrenics was noted in 17 cases (31% ).
6. As to the sibling position, 26% were oldest children, 10% youngest, 12% were only children. All other placement constituted 52%.
7. The average family size of members of the schizophrenic group was 4.1 children per family,
8. Among the group, 4,1% were professed protestants, 2 % Catholics, 2 % Biddhisns, 53% other or none.
